Meet Connie

Connie Steinmetz is a dedicated educator, leader, and advocate, and she is a candidate for State Representative from the 87th District. She has lived in the St. Louis area for over 40 years, the last 14 of which have been in Maryland Heights. She has a strong background of service, leadership, and political action, and is ready to get to work for her constituents.

Career

Connie recently retired from a nearly 40-year career in public education, including 37 years as a teacher in the Hazelwood School District. While working in Hazelwood, Connie was an active member and leader of the Hazelwood NEA teacher’s union, as well as the Missouri National Education Association. She was President of Hazelwood NEA for six years and was a Building Representative and member of the Executive Committee for many years prior. With Missouri NEA, she served on both the Board of Directors and Political Action Committee and attended many state and national conferences and representative assemblies to support her fellow members. Connie served on the Executive Board for the North County Labor Club, collaborating with other local labor leaders to support organized labor, union members, and working families.

Family

Connie has known the importance of working families her entire life. Connie grew up in the Kansas City area, and as she says, she was “born with a union spoon in (her) mouth.” Her father was a locomotive engineer and was also a proud union member and leader. Her former mother-in-law, Kaye Steinmetz, was a former Missouri State Representative, and is the inspiration behind the “Connie Cares!” slogan you will see and hear throughout the campaign. Connie loves spending time with her three daughters and four grandchildren.

Political Involvement

Connie has been active in local, regional, and state politics for decades. She was a committeewoman for the Lewis and Clark Township Democrats and served as secretary and president of the Independent Democrats in Florissant. Through her work with Hazelwood NEA, Missouri NEA, and North County Labor, she has helped identify, recommend, and elect candidates to school boards, municipal governments, and the State Legislature. She has also worked closely with elected officials throughout the St. Louis area and across Missouri to help support residents, school districts, labor groups, and communities.

The Leader We Need

Connie is excited about the opportunity to represent the 87th District in the Missouri House. The House needs dedicated advocates for high-quality education, working families, and strong communities, and Connie is the right person for the job. We look forward to providing you more opportunities to learn about and work with Connie in the coming weeks and months!
